  1. ability的基本意思是泛指做各種事情的“能力”??梢灾阁w力方面的,也可以指智力方面的,有時還指法律上的能力;可以是生來就有的生理功能,也可以是后天通過實踐學得的。作此解時僅指能力而不涉及能力的高低,只用單數形式。ability指“智力,技能”時用作可數名詞,且常用于復數形式。ability也可指“聰明,智慧”,這時用作不可數名詞。單獨用ability或abilities時除帶后置修飾語或有上下文提示者外,一般都指智力。
  2. 表示“在某方面有能力”時ability可接介詞in, at, for等;表示“做某事的能力”時可接動詞不定式,也可接“in+動名詞”,但不接“of+動名詞”。表示“有能力的”,可說ability of。
  3. ability to do it前通常有限定詞,即可以說an ability to do it,也可以說the ability to do it,還可以說sb's ability to do it。注意這種結構中的動詞不定式不可用于被動語態。
